Monday Night Combat Review

September 1, 2010 | Author Rob Smith

Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade program has delivered really quality downloadable games in the form of Limbo and Lara Croft. Monday Night Combat doesn’t quite achieve those lofty levels of appreciation as its derivative shooter format and thin options clearly peg it as an action game for the budget-conscious. Still, it’s fun enough for the price, and if you bring buddies along for the multiplayer options, you’ll find a Team Fortress 2-like (or that could also be -lite) experience for a bargain price.

Set in a future when Monday Night Football has been replaced by the latest television sensation, Monday Night Combat (like, 2011, when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires and over-paid players and over-profited owners butt heads and likely kill a season–or more–dead in its tracks) this arena combat game tells its own crazy tale. The Helios Corporations has, among other Google-like enterprises, “acquired” Spain and France, rebranded them as “Spance” and set an arena there for the ultimate TV show.

Mafia II Review

August 30, 2010 | Author Rob Smith

Hands-up, who played the original Mafia on PC? It sold some two million copies, but that was a long time ago. If you didn’t, what you missed was a stylish third-person action game, heavy on lore, overly burdened by minutiae, but ultimately compelling for its setting and story. Flash forward eight years and the sequel makes you wonder if the developers hadn’t spent all that time at film school. Mafia II is a game high on cinematic art and story, but surprisingly lacking in core gameplay. Here’s the details.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Review

August 27, 2010 | Author Billy Shibley

Although the gameplay of the 2007 release, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men left something to be desired, it was wrapped in a story of two broken men forced to put morals aside to save the ones they love. It certainly wasn’t Oscar-worthy but it laid the groundwork for a potentially interesting sequel. Less than three years later and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Day is upon us. How does it compare to its predecessor? Let’s find out.

Clash of the Titans Review

August 23, 2010 | Author Rob Smith

It’s probably fair to assume that the developers of Clash of the Titans didn’t go into this project’s initial planning sessions with a clean whiteboard and scrawl goals of:

* Destroy audience’s fond memories of the camp classic mythology story

* Make combat as complicated as possible

* Ship months after the movie hit theaters to dodge all that free marketing publicity

* Avoid fun

Piyotama Review

August 20, 2010 | Author Jason Jasicki

High definition graphics, visceral sound that rivals the IMAX Theater and a unique gameplay gimmick seems to define newly released videogames of late. Simple and fun games that anyone can pick up and play are second in line to gaming juggernauts like Madden and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Outside of the Wii or DS, casual titles don’t usually find homes on other consoles on the market. But then a little title like Piyotama comes across the PSN screen reminding us of just how gaming used to be…

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World The Game Review

| Author Lawrence Sonntag

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a hard movie to pidgeonhole. It’s got dorky references, but it’s about indie music and relationships. In the same way, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World The Game is a hard game to evaluate. At its core, the game is a modern-day, mechanically awkward recreation of NES beat ‘em up River City Ransom, but it also has so much unique charm and loads of 8-bit homage that it can exist on those virtues alone. The result is style over substance, but so much so it should appeal to anyone enamored with the movie.

Hey Rodger! Good to see you again, it’s a hot one out there isn’t it? Yeah, they didn’t tell you when you became a masseur that you’d have to show up at the crack of dawn did they? Here’s some coffee.

Hydro Thunder: Hurricane Review

| Author Lawrence Sonntag

Hydro Thunder: Hurricane is, shockingly, a fantastic spiritual successor that nobody knew they wanted. Crazy courses, simple controls, and freaking jet-boats on water mean there are two distinct yet equally valid reasons to play Hydro Thunder: Hurricane. Either you want a few hours of stupid fun, or you want to believe, for a fleeting few seconds, that your Xbox 360 is actually a Dreamcast.

Monster Rancher DS Review

August 12, 2010 | Author Jason Jasicki

If you would ask anyone familiar with gaming in the last decade to tell you what portable game features monsters battling each other by the command of their trainers you can guarantee the results would turn up Pokémon. A lot of us sometimes forget that another game series exists where adorable monsters beat the living hell out of each other while fans scream for more in the stands. Luckily, another game in the oft-forgotten Monster Rancher series is upon us in the form of Monster Rancher DS. Utilizing the DS’ touch screen and microphone to create a variety of monsters, could this be the game that dethrones the mighty Pokémon dynasty from its handheld pedestal?
